Short answer: Yes, in important respects — but it's complicated and depends on what kind of "polarization" you mean. The case that it's worse than ever By several measures, the U.S. is at or near historic highs: - Affective polarization (dislike of the other side) has grown dramatically. Short answer: Yes, by most measures—but with important nuance The research is fairly consistent: political polarization in the U.S. today is higher than it has been in at least 50 years, and by some measures the highest in over a century—but how bad it is depends on which type of polarization you're measuring. Whether political polarization is worse than in the past depends entirely on how far back you look and how polarization is measured. If compared to the mid-to-late 20th century, the answer is a resounding yes—by nearly every metric, the country is more divided today. However, if we look at the full arc of American history, we are currently at levels of division comparable to the Reconstruction E

Polarization is rising on several measures — I'll gather the latest research and historical trends to put it in context. It depends on timeframe and how you measure it - but by most modern measures, yes, worse than the last 50-80 years, no, not worse than the most divided periods of American history. 1. The answer to whether political polarization is worse than in the past depends entirely on which era of history you are comparing it to. If you are comparing today to the recent past (the last 50 to 60 years), yes, polarization is significantly worse. However, if you look at deep history (specifically the mid-19th century), no, it is not worse than the period surrounding the American Civil War

Whether political polarization is "worse" today than in the past depends heavily on how it is measured and which historical eras are used as a comparison. By almost every metric used by political scientists, polarization in the United States is at its highest level in over a century. However, when viewed through the full lens of American history, today’s divisions, while severe, still fall short

Yes, by most measurable standards—especially since the mid-to-late 20th century—political polarization in the United States is worse than it has been in recent decades, though it is not unprecedented in the full sweep of American history, and the public is not always as divided on issues as elites or perceptions suggest.[[1]](https://scienceinsights.org/how-political-polarization-has-changed-over-

The question of whether Russia's invasion of Ukraine is justified is a subject of profound global division. The Russian government has presented several security, historical, and humanitarian arguments to justify its actions. Conversely, Ukraine, the United Nations, and the vast majority of international legal scholars and sovereign states have rejected these claims, viewing the invasion as an unp

Whether political polarization is "worse" than it has been in the past depends entirely on how polarization is measured. If measured by congressional gridlock, ideological sorting, and mutual partisan hatred (affective polarization), the United States is more polarized than it has been in roughly 150 years. Short answer: Yes, by most measures — especially in the U.S. The research is fairly consistent: polarization today, particularly in the United States, is higher than it's been in decades, though the picture is more nuanced than a simple "worst ever." Elite/congressional polarization is at a modern high On average, Democrats and Republicans are farther apart ideologically today than at any time

The short answer is yes and no. Whether political polarization is "worse" than in the past depends entirely on what era you are comparing it to. If you compare today’s political climate to the last 50 to 70 years (living memory for most people), polarization is indeed at its worst modern level. However, if you look at the entirety of American history, we are not at an all-time peak. --- 1.

If your point of comparison is the American Civil War (1861–1865)—during which the country physically fractured and hundreds of thousands of lives were lost—then polarization today is not at its absolute historical peak. However, if your point of comparison is the last 100 to 1
