Yes, by most standard measures of the modern era (roughly the last 50–100 years), political polarization in the United States is worse than it has been in recent decades, though it is not comparable to the Civil War era in scale of conflict or existential stakes. It has risen sharply since the late 20th century (especially after ~2008 in some metrics), affects elites and the public, and includes b

To answer whether political polarization is worse than in the past, political scientists and historians generally split the answer into two parts: Yes, it is worse than at any point in modern polling history (the last 50 to 70 years), but no, it has not yet reached the absolute physical extreme of the American Civil War. However, today’s polarization has unique, scientifically measured character

I'll look into historical data, surveys, and expert analyses on political polarization to compare current levels with the past.Gathering more details from key sources on polarization trends.[[1]](https://www.cam.ac.uk/stories/political-division-united-states)[[2]](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2022/03/10/the-polarization-in-todays-congress-has-roots-that-go-back-decades/)[[3]](https://ww

It's complicated—the answer depends heavily on which type of polarization you mean and what time period you're comparing to. By recent historical standards: Yes, and dramatically so Several measures point to modern U.S. polarization being unusually severe within the last century-plus: In Congress: Congress is now more polarized than at any time since the late 1870s Reconstruction Era, based on

To answer whether political polarization is worse today than in the past, it helps to look at which "past" you are comparing it to. If you compare today’s political climate to the mid-to-late 20th century, polarization is vastly worse on nearly every metric. However, if you look further back to the Civil War era or the Gilded Age of the late 19th century, today's division is comparable to those

Yes, by multiple standard measures, political polarization in the United States is worse (higher) than it has been for much of the recent past—particularly since the mid-20th century—and in some respects reaches levels not seen in decades or longer, though it is not entirely without historical precedent. Polarization is multi-dimensional (ideological positions on issues, partisan sorting, elite vs

The question of whether political polarization is worse today than in the past depends entirely on which past you are comparing it to and how you measure it. If you compare today to the mid-to-late 20th century, the answer is a definitive yes. However, if you look at the broader sweep of American history—including the Civil War, the Gilded Age, or the founding of the republic—the answer is more

Your question touches emissions, resources and many lifecycle trade-offs — I'll gather the latest research to compare. Yes, overall - but with important nuances. Over their full lifecycle from manufacturing to driving to disposal, electric vehicles (EVs) are typically better for the environment and climate than comparable gasoline-powered vehicles, even though making them has a higher initial env

Yes, by multiple key metrics, political polarization in the United States is higher now than it has been for much of the past several decades (especially since the mid-20th century bipartisan era), and in some elite-level measures it exceeds most of the post-Reconstruction period—though it is not unprecedented in American history and falls short of the existential divisions of the Civil War era.

The evidence suggests political polarization—at least in the U.S.—is worse than it's been in recent history, but whether it's the "worst ever" depends heavily on how you measure it and what time frame you compare to. Here's the nuanced picture: Congressional/Elite Polarization: Yes, Historically High By the most common quantitative measure (DW-NOMINATE scores, which track how members of Congres

To answer whether political polarization is worse than in the past, political scientists, sociologists, and historians generally divide the issue into three main categories: affective polarization (how much we dislike the other side), legislative polarization (how divided our politicians are), and issue polarization (how far apart our actual policy views are). When comparing today's political cl

Your question on EV vs gas-powered impact touches lifecycle emissions and other factors — I'll gather the latest research to compare them. Yes, overall research finds electric vehicles (EVs) are better for the environment than gas-powered vehicles on a lifecycle basis, although the advantage depends on several factors. 1. Lifecycle Greenhouse Gas Emissions - EVs win overall Battery electric c

Yes, by multiple measurable standards—especially since the mid-20th century—political polarization in the United States is worse than it has been for decades, and in some respects it approaches or exceeds post-Civil War highs. However, it is not unprecedented in American history, and the nature of today’s divisions differs from earlier peaks. Comparisons depend on the metric (elite vs. mass public

To answer whether political polarization is worse today than in the past, it helps to divide the question into two frames of reference: the recent past (the last 40 to 50 years) and deep history (the late 18th and 19th centuries). The short answer is yes, political polarization is significantly worse than it has been in modern memory. However, it is not the worst it has ever been in the full spa

Yes, by multiple measurable standards, political polarization in the United States is worse now than it has been for most of the past century, particularly since the mid-20th century, though it is not unprecedented in American history and differs in character from earlier peaks like the Civil War era.[[1]](https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2022/05/us-democrat-republican-partisan-polarizati

Whether political polarization is "worse" than in the past depends on how you measure it and which era you are comparing it to. If the comparison is to the American Civil War (1861–1865), the answer is no. During that era, polarization led to the literal physical splintering of the country and a war that claimed hundreds of thousands of lives. Similarly, the late 1960s featured far more physical

Yes, by most empirical measures, U.S. political polarization is worse now than at any point in recent decades—though it's more complicated when you compare it to the full sweep of American history. The Case That It's Worse Than in Recent Memory Affective polarization (partisan animosity) has surged. To answer whether political polarization is worse than in the past, it helps to distinguish between the recent past (the last 40 to 50 years) and the deep past (the 19th century). In short: Yes, polarization is worse than at any point in modern living memory. However, it has not yet reached the ultimate structural collapse of the U.S. Civil War era, though by some legislative metrics, our govern

Yes, by multiple standard measures, political polarization in the United States is worse (higher) than it has been for much of the modern era (roughly the post-World War II period or the last 50 years), though it is not unprecedented in all of American history and comparisons depend on the exact metric and timeframe.[[1]](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2022/03/10/the-polarization-in-today
