Short answer: Yes, by most measures—but with important nuance The research is fairly consistent: political polarization in the U.S. today is higher than it has been in at least 50 years, and by some measures the highest in over a century—but how bad it is depends on which type of polarization you're measuring. What the data shows Congressional/elite polarization has grown dramatically since t

The short answer is no, it is not too late to prevent the worst impacts of climate change, but we cannot fully "undo" or instantly reverse the damage that has already been done. To understand where we stand, it helps to break the question down into three parts: what we can stop, what is permanently locked in, and what it would actually take to "reverse" the warming. --- 1. Can we stop further

Short answer: Yes, by most measures — but with important nuance By nearly every metric political scientists track, the U.S. is more polarized today than at any point in the last 50+ years, though the picture is more complicated than headlines suggest. Is Political Polarization Worse Than It's Been in the Past? The answer is nuanced: yes, by many measures polarization is at or near historic highs in recent decades—but it's not unprecedented in American history, and the picture differs depending on what exactly you're measuring. Is Political Polarization Worse Than It's Been in the Past? The answer is nuanced: yes, by most measures — but with important caveats depending on how you define and measure it, and over what time horizon. Political polarization is a complex topic, and the answer depends on what exactly you're measuring and what timeframe you're comparing. Let me look into current research on this. Is Political Polarization Worse Than It's Been in the Past? Short answer: In terms of recent decades (since the 1950s-60s), yes—by most measures polarization is at or near record highs. Short answer: Yes, by most measures — especially "affective" polarization — but with important nuances Political scientists distinguish between a few different types of polarization, and the answer depends on which one you're asking about. Affective polarization (how much people dislike the other side) is genuinely at historic highs. Using decades of American National Election Studies data, aff

I'll research this question to give you a well-informed answer based on current analysis and data. Short answer: It's complicated — it depends on what kind of polarization you're measuring and what timeframe you compare it to. Here's a more nuanced breakdown: By several measures, yes — polarization is at modern highs In Congress, ideological divergence between the parties is the worst it's bee

Short answer: Yes, by most measures—especially in the U.S.—polarization is at or near historic highs, though the full picture is nuanced. Elite/Congressional polarization Political scientists tracking congressional voting patterns find striking evidence of a historic shift. Most evidence points to yes — by many measures, U.S. political polarization today is more intense than at any point in the last 50-150 years, though there's nuance to that claim. Yes — by most measures, political polarization (especially in the U.S.) is worse than it has been in recent historical memory, though the picture is more nuanced than "worst ever." Congressional/Elite Polarization This is the clearest case. Pew Research Center analysis finds that, on average, Democrats and Republicans are farther apart ideologically today than at any time in the past 50 years.

Yes — by most measures, political polarization in the U.S. today is more severe than it has been in many decades, though the nature of that polarization is nuanced and some caveats are worth noting. The evidence for "worse than before" Affective polarization (dislike of the other side) has roughly doubled since the 1970s. Using the American National Election Studies' "feeling thermometer," the

To answer whether it is "too late" to reverse climate change, it helps to distinguish between two different goals: stopping climate change from getting worse and cooling the planet back to pre-industrial levels. The short answer is: It is absolutely not too late to prevent the worst-case scenarios, but fully reversing the warming we have already caused will take centuries. Here is what the late

Short answer: Yes, by most measures—especially in the U.S. Political polarization today is generally considered more severe than at most points in recent historical memory, though the full picture is nuanced depending on what exactly you measure and over what timeframe. Short answer: In some important ways, yes — but context matters, and the US has seen worse eras historically. The case that current polarization IS at historic highs (for the modern era): 1. Ideological distance in Congress — a Pew Research Center analysis finds that Democrats and Republicans are farther apart ideologically today than at any time in the past 50 years. Yes — by most measures, political polarization in the U.S. is worse now than it has been in decades, though the picture is more nuanced depending on what kind of "polarization" you mean. Short answer: Mostly yes — by most measures, but with important nuance By several key metrics, polarization in the U.S. (and parts of other democracies) is at or near its highest point in decades, and in some cases the highest since the Civil War era. But researchers disagree on exactly how to compare eras, and different types of polarization have moved differently. Congressional/elite polariz

The short answer is no, it is not too late to prevent the worst impacts of climate change, but we cannot completely "undo" what has already occurred. To understand where we stand, it helps to look at what climate science says about stopping global warming, reversing temperatures, and dealing with the damage that is already locked in. --- 1. We can stop further warming (The "Net-Zero" Reality)

Short answer: Yes, by most measures — especially in the U.S. — but with important nuance The evidence strongly suggests that current political polarization, particularly in the United States, is at or near record highs by several key measures, though the picture is more complicated when you dig into why and how. Is Political Polarization Worse Than in the Past? The honest answer is: it depends on what you're measuring—and by several key metrics, yes, it's at or near historic highs, though the U.S. has survived worse periods overall. Is It Too Late to Reverse Climate Change? Short answer: Yes and no — it depends on what you mean by "reverse." The warming already locked in can't be undone quickly The world has already warmed roughly 1.34°C above pre-industrial levels as of 2025, and the carbon budget to stay within the 1.5°C target set by the Paris Agreement is virtually exhausted. More recent tracking puts warming even hi

Based on the research, yes — in the United States especially, most measures indicate political polarization is significantly worse than in past decades, though the picture is more nuanced than a simple "worse than ever" narrative. Yes, by most standard measures, political polarization in the United States—particularly ideological, partisan, and affective forms—is worse than it has been in recent decades (roughly the post-WWII era through the 1990s/early 2000s) and stands out as unusually high and sustained among long-established wealthy democracies. Comparisons to the more distant past (e.g., Civil War era, early republic,
