The short answer from most governments and analysts in 2025-2026 is: yes, but its relevance is increasingly contested and conditional on reform. The debate is no longer about whether the UN should exist, but whether it can produce results. Why the UN is still considered r

Short answer: No independent body has substantiated that “a majority” of Gazan journalists killed since October 7, 2023 were linked to terrorist organizations. That claim comes chiefly from the Israeli military and a handful of aligned research/advocacy groups, and it has not been verified by press‑freedom monitors. What different sources say - Israeli military/advocacy claims: In October 2026 th

Short answer: No. Why not: - International law: Article 2(4) of the UN Charter prohibits the use of force against another state’s territorial integrity or political independence. Russia’s 24 Feb 2022 invasion wasn’t authorized by the UN Security Council and doesn’t meet the Article 51 self‑defense exception. - ICJ finding: On Mar 16, 2022, the International Court of Justice ordered Russia to susp

Short answer: Usually good for covered workers; for the overall economy it depends on how unions are designed and how they interact with firms and markets. What unions tend to do well for workers - Raise pay and benefits for members and often set wage/benefit benchmarks that spill over to nearby nonunion jobs. - Narrow pay gaps (by skill, gender, race) via transparent pay scales and standardized

Short answer: Yes—high consumption of ultra‑processed foods (UPFs) is a public health concern. The weight of evidence links higher UPF intake to worse health and large population exposure makes the potential harm substantial. That said, not all UPFs are equal, and some uncertainties remain about exactly what in “ultra‑processing” drives risk. Why many public‑health experts are concerned - Consist

Short answer: Better than in 2020 in several concrete ways, but still not where it needs to be—especially on workforce, coordination, stable funding, and global cooperation. Where the U.S. is stronger now - Faster medical countermeasures: HHS’s ASPR and BARDA have updated multi‑year plans and budgets to speed vaccines, drugs, diagnostics, and domestic manufacturing; FDA continues to refine emerge

Short answer: No—cryptocurrency isn’t a “safe” investment in the way cash, CDs, Treasury bills, or broad stock index funds are considered relatively safe. It’s a high‑risk, highly speculative asset class that has repeatedly experienced large boom‑bust cycles and rapid 50–90% drawdowns. What makes it risky - Extreme volatility: Prices can swing dramatically in hours or days; multi‑year drawdowns a

Here’s a concise, nonpartisan snapshot of key threats in the U.S. political climate as of October 28, 2026: - Rising polarization and collapsing trust in institutions: Surveys show deepening partisan hostility and historically low confidence in core institutions and leaders, which weakens democratic problem‑solving and makes consensus harder. Trust in news has fallen to a record low in the U.S. t

Short answer: No—on average, prices in U.S. stores are higher than a year ago. Details: - The latest Consumer Price Index shows overall prices were up 3.7% in September 2026 versus September 2025. ([bls.gov](https://www.bls.gov/news.release/CPI.htm)) - Grocery prices (“food at home”) were 1.8% higher year over year; restaurant prices (“food away from home”) were up 3.5%. ([bls.gov](https://www.bl

Short answer: Blanket pauses on all AI work are a blunt tool. A better approach is targeted, enforceable restrictions on the highest‑risk activities, paired with strong safety standards, audits, and incident response. Temporary pauses should be used when concrete risk thresholds are exceeded or when safeguards aren’t in place. Why not a blanket pause - Costs: would stall useful advances (medicine

Short answer: It depends where you operate, what kind of AI you build (general‑purpose vs. “high‑risk” or sector‑specific), and who your users are. Here’s the current, high‑level map as of October 28, 2026. United States (federal) - Federal use of AI: agencies must inventory AI, assess and manage risks, give the public notice for “safety‑impacting”/rights‑impacting uses, and shut down non‑complia

Short answer: it depends on what you mean by “polarization.” - In Congress (elite polarization): By modern metrics that track how consistently Democrats and Republicans vote apart, polarization is at or near the highest levels seen in more than a century. The parties are far more ideologically sorted than they were in the mid‑20th century, when you had liberal Republicans and conservative Democra

Yes. The student-led protests began in April 1989, centered on Beijing’s Tiananmen Square, and the military crackdown occurred on the night of June 3–4, 1989.

Short answer: It depends on your goals. “UBI” is a tool, not an end in itself. Here’s a concise way to think about it for the U.S. When a UBI makes most sense - If your top goals are to end deep poverty, reduce bureaucracy/stigma, and give everyone a stable floor, a modest UBI (or a close cousin) is well-suited. - If your top goals are tight targeting and low fiscal cost, a guaranteed income/nega

Short answer: Yes—across their full life cycle, most battery‑electric vehicles (EVs) are better for the environment than comparable gasoline cars, especially for climate and local air quality. The size of the benefit depends on where your electricity comes from, the vehicle’s size/efficiency, and how long you keep it. What “better” usually means - Climate (greenhouse gases): EVs generally cut lif

Short answer: it depends on who’s using it, how, and for what. For many adults, the average effects are mixed-to-small; benefits grow with intentional, active use, while harms rise with heavy, passive, late‑night, or appearance‑focused use. Risks are higher for some teens and for people already struggling with anxiety, depression, or loneliness. Helpful when - Maintains relationships and communit

Short answer: It depends on your goals. In the U.S., there’s a strong case for tighter, targeted regulations that keep firearms from dangerous situations and people while preserving lawful ownership and self‑defense. Broad bans are both politically and constitutionally fraught; focused measures tend to deliver more safety for less burden. If you want “more regulation,” here’s what a balanced pack

Short answer: In several areas, yes—China presents significant challenges and some threats to U.S. interests—but it’s also an essential counterpart the U.S. must work with. The risk varies by domain. Where it most threatens or challenges U.S. interests - Military/security: Rapid PLA modernization, large missile forces, and coercive activity around Taiwan and in the South and East China Seas raise

Short answer: yes—just not for everything people wish it did. Where the UN remains uniquely relevant - Convening legitimacy: It’s the only forum where almost every government sits. That makes it the default place to set global norms (human rights, refugees, oceans, climate) and to negotiate big-tent agreements. - Humanitarian backbone: UN agencies (e.g., WFP, UNHCR, UNICEF, WHO within the UN syst

Short answer: If the goal is that a minimum-wage job preserves a stable standard of living, then yes—the minimum wage should at least keep up with the cost of living. How you design that link matters. Ways to link it (and the trade‑offs): - Index to inflation (CPI): Preserves purchasing power automatically and predictably; simplest to administer. Con: Doesn’t reflect local housing/childcare spike

Yes. Vaccines are one of the most effective tools we have to prevent disease. - How they work: Vaccines train your immune system to recognize a germ before you encounter the real thing, reducing your risk of infection and, especially, severe illness and complications. - Real‑world impact: Routine vaccination eliminated smallpox worldwide, has pushed polio to the brink of eradication, and has slas

Short answer: neither is inherently “safer.” It depends on the model’s capability level, how it’s released (API vs downloadable weights), and the safeguards around it. As of October 28, 2026, a good rule of thumb is: - For frontier‑level models with potentially dangerous capabilities, closed/gated access is usually safer. - For small/medium models and most ordinary use cases, open releases can be
