Is cryptocurrency a safe investment?

Is crypto a safe bet? I'll review the latest evidence on its risks and volatility.

Cryptocurrency is generally not considered a safe investment in the traditional sense. It is classified as a high-risk, speculative asset.

> Cryptocurrency is deemed a high-risk asset and prone to sharp price movements

It is possible to make a lot of money, but it is also very possible to lose all of your invested money. Multiple factors show that cryptocurrency is not always a safe investment

Why it is considered unsafe

1. Extreme Volatility
Prices can fluctuate dramatically within minutes or hours. It is not uncommon for prices to fluctuate by 10–20% in a single day, and by 10–30% in a single day, making crypto one of the riskiest asset classes.

Even Bitcoin, the world's most valuable cryptocurrency, endured 70%-80% peak-to-trough declines during the crypto crashes in 2017-2018 and 2021-2022. Realized volatility has dropped from 84 percent in 2018 to about 46 percent annualized so far in 2026, but that calmer average conceals more frequent extreme moves.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) warns:

> Investments in crypto asset securities can be exceptionally volatile & speculative, & the platforms where investors buy, sell, borrow/lend these securities may lack important protections for investors

And:

> The only money you should put at risk with any speculative investment is money you can afford to lose entirely

2. Lack of Regulation and Investor Protection

As of May 2026, there were still no clear-cut regulations governing the broader cryptocurrency industry. Governments around the world are still developing regulations for cryptocurrency.

This lack of a unified regulatory framework contributes to the prevalence of scams, exchange failures, and market manipulation. The lack of government regulation means there's limited recourse if things go wrong.

Unlike bank deposits or brokerage accounts, Bitcoin investments typically do not have government insurance. Investing in cryptocurrencies involves risk including complete loss of invested funds and there is no guarantee of investor protection or legal recourse.

3. Security, Fraud and Scams

Cryptocurrency exchanges, more so than stock exchanges, are vulnerable to hacking and other criminal activity. While blockchain technology itself is secure, cryptocurrency exchanges and wallets can be vulnerable to hacking, and exchanges may face hacks, leading to the loss of funds.

The crypto market has a high number of scams due to limited regulation, including pump-and-dump schemes, phishing scams, malware attacks and wallet breaches. The SEC has issued warnings regarding the risks associated with cryptocurrency custody and security, emphasizing private key storage and phishing risks.

4. Lack of Intrinsic Value and Project Risk

Unlike stocks, which represent ownership in companies, cryptocurrencies often lack intrinsic value. There's also no guarantee that a crypto project you invest in will succeed, and many projects are scams.

Compared to traditional assets, stocks are generally considered safer than cryptocurrencies because they are regulated and backed by company performance.

Why Some Investors Still Consider It

1. High Return Potential: One of the main reasons investors are drawn to cryptocurrency is its potential for massive returns, far outperforming traditional assets like stocks and bonds in some periods.

2. Portfolio Diversification: Adding cryptocurrency to an investment portfolio can increase diversification since crypto assets often behave differently from traditional markets.

Owning some cryptocurrency can increase your portfolio's diversification since cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin have historically shown few price correlations with the U.S. stock market. Its correlation with gold remains low (0.01–0.10), preserving its unique diversification benefits.

3. Technology and Decentralization: Blockchain technology is considered revolutionary with applications beyond currency, and cryptocurrencies operate independently of central banks.

How to Reduce Risk If You Choose to Invest

If you decide to invest, experts and regulators suggest treating it as a small, speculative part of a diversified portfolio, not as a safe core holding:

•Only invest what you can afford to lose entirely - the standard regulatory guidance for speculative investments.
•Keep allocation small - For example, BlackRock recommends 1% to 2% allocation to Bitcoin in a traditional portfolio.
•Diversify and use Dollar-Cost Averaging (DCA): Investing a fixed amount regularly regardless of market conditions helps reduce impact of volatility, and investing in multiple cryptocurrencies can reduce risk.
•Do thorough research: Understanding the technology, use case, and team behind a cryptocurrency is essential, and thoroughly research the cryptocurrency you plan to purchase.
•Use secure storage: Using hardware wallets and secure storage methods can protect investments from hacking and theft.

Bottom Line

For conservative investors seeking safety, capital preservation, and insured protections, cryptocurrency is not safe. For risk-tolerant investors with a long time horizon who understand the technology and can tolerate 50-80% drawdowns, a small allocation may offer growth and diversification, but should be approached with caution, proper research, and a well-balanced strategy.

> Investing in crypto assets is risky, but it can be a good investment if you do it properly and as part of a diversified portfolio.

This is not financial advice. Consider speaking with a licensed financial advisor to assess your risk tolerance and goals before investing in cryptocurrency.
