1. France rocked by violent nationwide protests
What began as student-led demonstrations against school underfunding and poor conditions escalated into the worst urban unrest France has seen in years. France is reeling from widespread damage caused by violent protests that saw looting, 2,400 people arrested and a historic town hall torched, with almost 1,000 police officers and gendarmes injured, seven of them badly wounded. Hundreds of shops were looted in Paris and other cities, and losses are estimated to be in the hundreds of millions of euros. President Macron addressed the nation, saying "Tonight, we all feel anger and shame," adding that there must be a distinction between protesters with "legitimate demands" and "those who destroyed, smashed, and looted." He vowed that "those who looted will have to pay back for the damage, and those who sought to bring down the Republic will be held accountable." Clashes and unrest continued into Sunday in central Paris.
2. Trump pauses new Russia sanctions for 60 days
The day after waiving sanctions and tariffs related to Russian exports, Trump said he has yet to announce a final decision as Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the president will use up to 60 days to assess the economic impact of Russia-related sanctions and tariffs he waived a day earlier. Trump signed an executive order waiving key sanctions and tariffs under the Graham Act, which he signed last month at the urging of lawmakers who want to pressure Moscow over its war in Ukraine. The waiver drew criticism from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who warned it would embolden Vladimir Putin and prolong the war, while Senator Darline Graham said she disagreed with the decision, stating "Personally, I would choose to keep the pressure on Russia."
3. Ukraine escalates drone strikes on Russia
Related to the above, Ukraine launched one of its biggest drone attacks on Russia this year, with smoke rising above an oil terminal in Saint Petersburg following an air attack.
4. AI agents vs. banks — security crackdown
A notable tech/finance story: Schwab CEO Rick Wurster told Bloomberg his firm now gets a weekly report showing it blocks "tens and twenties" of unauthorized AI-agent attempts to touch client accounts, naming Meta's Muse as one example, while JPMorgan's Jamie Dimon confirmed JPM is also blocking outside agents.
