Here's a roundup of the most significant news stories making headlines today, October 18, 2026:

🇫🇷 France Engulfed in Worst Unrest in Years

The biggest international story right now is the fallout from massive nationwide protests in France on Saturday. Rioting erupted in cities across France as demonstrations against rising living costs and declining public services spiralled out of control in some of the worst violence the country has witnessed for decades, with violent fringe groups targeting public buildings, looting luxury boutiques and supermarkets and attacking police vehicles and officers.

The crowd reached about 550,000 people nationwide, including 110,000 in Paris, though organizers estimated the national figure far higher, at 800,000, with police making about 400 arrests by nightfall. In Limoges, an arson attack on the city hall started a fire and the bell tower collapsed, while in Marseille participants broke down the front door of the city hall.

President Macron responded forcefully: "No room for violence in our Republic. Those who have broken, attacked the prefectures as well as businesses, looted even our town halls, will be prosecuted and punished," Macron wrote. The movement began with student demonstrations backing striking teachers over a month ago, with protesters wanting the government to raise wages and pensions, lower prices and protect public services from budget cuts. The unrest has also spread elsewhere in Europe, with similar protests reported in Belgium, Italy (Milan), and Albania.

🇺🇦 Ukraine War

Russian strikes ignited massive fires at businesses in Odesa and Zaporizhzhia as President Zelensky met European leaders for talks. Separately, Trump has called White House talks "very good" toward a Russia-Ukraine peace deal, though this move is drawing backlash from some lawmakers over Russia sanctions relief.

🇺🇸 US Domestic News

•People were killed and injured in an incident at a military base in Alberta, Canada.

•A man was fatally shot during a dispute at a Midtown Manhattan subway station.

•Politically, Trump said Susie Wiles will remain in her role at the White House "until the end."

•Pope Leo left the hospital four days after lung cancer surgery.

🇮🇳 India & South Asia

•India's Supreme Court ruled that children have a fundamental right to access and use the internet.

•India and the United States announced a ten-year defence framework.

•An earthquake of magnitude 5.7 shook Pakistan's Balochistan region.

If you'd like, I can go deeper into any one of these stories — the France crisis and Ukraine developments appear to be the most consequential stories unfolding right now.
