Here's a roundup of the most important news and topics making headlines today, October 17, 2026:

U.S. Politics

Another White House Press Secretary shake-up: President Trump has fired Katie Zacharia as press secretary, ending her turbulent week-long stint as the White House's top spokesperson. Zacharia was named to the role Oct. 9 and stepped behind the podium for her first briefing just days later on Oct. 13; the briefing lasted 14 minutes and she took only three questions. The dismissal came after Trump told reporters, "I don't think Katie should be made to suffer like she's suffering at the hands of the press... I said to her, 'Honestly, if I were you, I'd reconsider.'" Controversy had grown over her credentials — she reportedly graduated from law school but failed the bar exam, raising questions about how thoroughly she was vetted for the job.

Global Financial Markets

Wall Street is in the midst of a sharp tech-driven selloff:

•US stock indices closed lower on Friday as the selloff in chipmakers extended into an eighth consecutive session, marking the sector's longest losing streak since the 2008 financial crisis, with the S&P 500 falling 1.1%, the Dow shedding 175 points, and the Nasdaq dropping 2.5%. CoreWeave plunged 11.9%, extending its weekly losses to 23.7%, highlighting renewed concerns about credit risk tied to AI infrastructure spending.

•Another burst of selling in technology shares drove the Nasdaq 100 to its worst week since the April 2025 tariff turmoil, as investors questioned whether the AI infrastructure buildout has outrun firms' ability to get a return on investment.

•On the bond side, the 10-year Treasury yield was near 5.09% on reduced market expectations for a Fed rate hike later this month, while eurozone CPI inflation held steady at 3.8% in September, as expected.

South Korea

Major domestic stories include:

•A tragic fire incident: a joint investigation is being conducted into a metal printing factory fire in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, that injured eight people, with the firefighter transferred to hospital in cardiac arrest still in critical condition.

•A violent crime case: the suspect in a stabbing rampage that injured eight citizens in Incheon has been identified as 59-year-old Choi Choong-rak, who made rambling statements regarding his motive before his arrest.

•Political tension: Democratic Party leader Kim Min-seok announced discussions have begun on pushing for the impeachment of Supreme Court Chief Justice Cho Hee-de, with party reactions saying "a river of no return has been crossed."

India

Notable headlines include the commissioning of a new naval vessel — the Indian Navy commissioned the indigenously designed Multi-Purpose Vessel INS Samarthak — alongside ongoing trade talks, as India and the US continue legal drafting of a trade pact, according to Piyush Goyal.

Natural Disaster

A significant earthquake struck overnight: a 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck near Ozernovskiy in Russia.
