What are the 10 biggest news stories from today?
The top news stories shaping the headlines today include major developments in international conflicts, a tragic domestic shooting, significant U.S. political and legal battles ahead of the upcoming midterm elections, and notable events on the global stage:
1. Tragic School Shooting in Bend, Oregon
A devastating active shooter incident occurred at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon. A 16-year-old gunman forced entry into the school and fatally shot a teacher and three children (aged 5, 8, and 11). A heroic community bystander pursued the gunman inside the school and shot him dead before police arrived. Another 7-year-old child and a teacher remain hospitalized in critical condition. Governor Tina Kotek praised the bystander's intervention for preventing further loss of life.
2. Ukraine Resumes Russian Refinery Strikes as Trump Rift Deepens
Relations between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump have hit a new low. Following days of escalating tension over Trump's demand for an "energy ceasefire," Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine is resuming drone strikes on Russian oil refineries. This geopolitical escalation comes amid reports that Ukraine has run out of Patriot interceptor missiles and has faced critical disruptions to the Starlink network (operated by Elon Musk's SpaceX).
3. Federal Agents Seize Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Phone in Immigration Probe
The federal criminal investigation into Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar has sharply intensified weeks before the midterm elections. Federal authorities seized the Democratic lawmaker’s cellphone and issued more than a dozen grand jury subpoenas, targeting several of her relatives. The probe, which led to a search of her Washington, D.C. home earlier in the week, centers on potential fraud in her family's immigration paperwork from decades ago. Omar has condemned the actions as a campaign of "political intimidation".
4. Court Clears Former FEMA CFO, Rebuking Elon Musk and Kristi Noem
A federal magistrate judge formally cleared former FEMA Chief Financial Officer Mary Comans of any wrongdoing, issuing a scathing rebuke of high-ranking government officials. The judge ruled that former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem and billionaire Elon Musk (who headed the Department of Government Efficiency, DOGE) knowingly spread "objectively and demonstrably false" claims accusing Comans of illegally funneling money to migrant hotels. The court characterized the public smear campaign as "outrageous government conduct" meant to intimidate Comans after she was fired in early 2025.
5. DOJ Sues California Over Alleged Noncitizen Voting
The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against the state of California. The federal government claims to have identified more than 20,000 noncitizens who are unlawfully registered to vote, alleging that the state sent ballots to individuals ineligible to vote. Coming just weeks before the critical midterms, the lawsuit has sparked intense political debate.
6. Trump Backs Down on Livestreaming Fort Hood Shooter's Execution
Following widespread bipartisan condemnation and global backlash, President Trump has canceled a highly controversial plan to livestream the federal execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan. Critics and military allies had warned that broadcasting the execution of the mass shooter would serve as a propaganda tool and incite further violence.
7. Deadly Houthi Missile Strike on Yemeni Presidential Palace
At least five people were killed in a Houthi missile strike targeting the Yemeni presidential palace in the southern port city of Aden. The lethal escalation by the Iran-aligned rebel group has further rattled global energy markets and exposed mounting security challenges for Saudi Arabia and its allies in the region.
8. Minibus Crash at Channel Tunnel Platform Injures 19 in France
A minibus carrying truck drivers veered off course and crashed into a stationary LeShuttle freight train at the Eurotunnel loading platform in Coquelles, France, near Calais. The collision injured 19 people (all of them men of various nationalities on the minibus), with two airlifted to a hospital in Lille with serious, non-life-threatening injuries. The incident briefly suspended shuttle traffic through the tunnel.
9. Drone Strike on Tanker in Black Sea Leaves 7 Sailors Missing
Fears of the war in Ukraine expanding further into European waters grew after a drone struck the San Marino-flagged tanker Wine Trader off Romania's Black Sea coast. The attack caused a massive fire onboard the vessel. Romanian maritime search-and-rescue teams are actively looking for seven sailors who remain missing.
10. Pope Leo recovering Well from Cancer Surgery
The Vatican released a highly anticipated medical update, stating that Pope Leo's post-operative tests are normal and that he is walking and eating again. The pontiff recently underwent surgery to remove a cancerous portion of his lung, bringing relief to Catholics worldwide who had been closely monitoring his recovery.
