What is the current state of US politics?
Here's a snapshot of the current state of US politics as of mid-October 2026:
Midterm Elections Dominate the Landscape
The country is in the final stretch before the November 3, 2026 midterm elections, which will determine control of Congress, 36 governorships, and thousands of state legislative seats. All 435 seats in the U.S. House are up for election, with Republicans currently holding 218 seats and Democrats 214. In the Senate, Democrats hold 47 seats with 34 held this cycle, while Republicans hold 47 seats with 31 held.
Democrats appear to have significant momentum. With four weeks until midterm Election Day, polls put the chances of a Democratic takeover of both chambers of Congress much higher than they were a few months ago. A late-September poll found unaffiliated voters breaking for Democrats at 57 percent compared with 32 moving towards Republicans.
Governors' races are also competitive — Republicans are defending two governorships in states Kamala Harris won in 2024 (New Hampshire and Vermont), while Democrats are defending five governorships in states Trump won (Arizona, Kansas, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin).
Trump's Approval Rating Is Weak
Trump's approval numbers have been sliding to some of the lowest points of his second term. One major tracker shows 39.9% approve of the job Donald Trump is doing as President and 58.4% disapprove, a net rating of −18.5, as of October 14. Nate Silver's tracker is more pessimistic, noting that over the weekend, Trump hit yet another all-time approval rating low of net -23.9, before bouncing back slightly to -22.4. Things are also looking bearish for Trump on the issues — net approval of how he's handled trade (-28.7) and the economy (-29.9) are both near their all-time lows.
A Turbulent Year of Shutdowns
2026 has already been marked by repeated government funding crises. Two shutdowns occurred: a first shutdown from January 31–February 3, 2026, and a second, much longer shutdown from February 14 to April 30, 2026 (76 days), largely affecting the Department of Homeland Security. This followed the historic 43-day shutdown in late 2025 (Oct. 1–Nov. 12), which was the longest in U.S. history at the time.
To avoid a repeat before the midterms, the Senate passed a continuing resolution on August 8, 2026, the House cleared it on September 1, and President Trump signed it into law on September 2, funding federal agencies through December 11, 2026. However, the next funding cliff lands 38 days after the November 3 midterm, and prediction markets see another shutdown in the current cycle as more likely than not — setting up another lame-duck fiscal showdown right after the election.
Other Notable Dynamics
Bottom line: The U.S. is heading into a high-stakes midterm election with a wounded president (historically low approval), a Democratic Party riding momentum particularly among independents, a chaotic fiscal year marked by record-breaking shutdowns, and another funding deadline looming right after voters go to the polls.
