Were a majority of the Gazan journalists killed since October 7th, 2023 linked to terrorist organizations?
The question of journalist casualties in Gaza is contested — I'll examine casualty data and terrorism-affiliation claims to see if a majority link holds.
Claims that a majority of journalists killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023 were linked to terrorist organizations come from Israeli military and Israeli-affiliated research institutes, and are disputed by international press-freedom organizations.
What Israeli sources claim
More detailed formulation: "at least 170 'journalists' and media personnel who were killed during the war in Gaza were, in practice, members of the military wings of Hamas, the Islamic Jihad (PIJ)" , with breakdown 118 linked to Hamas's military wing, 49 linked to Palestinian Islamic Jihad, 17 participated in the October 7 invasion.
> His institute published a 140-page study in December examining, name by name, Palestinians identified as journalists or media workers killed in Gaza, and concluded that roughly 60% were members of or affiliated with terrorist organizations — primarily Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad
> The study examined 266 media workers reported killed between Oct. 7, 2023, and Nov. 30, 2025, and found that 157 were members of or affiliated with terror groups
Other reporting of the same study: "The Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center analyzed 266 Palestinians identified as journalists or media workers killed in Gaza between October 2023 and late November 2025 and concluded that about 60% had roles in Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, or other armed factions, including combat, command, or propaganda duties."
And: "at least 157 – approximately 60 percent – were members or affiliates", including 104 tied to Hamas and 45 to Islamic Jihad.
Proponents note that "more than 60 of these have already been admitted by Hamas and PIJ as their combatants through martyr notices published by the terrorist groups".
What independent press-freedom groups say
International organizations that track journalist killings do not accept the majority-linked claim and say only a small minority were confirmed combatants:
> After a review of its tally, it says Israeli forces have killed 191 Palestinian journalists and media workers since the start of the war in Gaza
Other reports put post-review total at 209, and that CPJ removed 19 militants after review, or that CPJ has removed 27 "journalists" from its lists after review.
CPJ acknowledged that "combatants should not be classified as journalists" and condemned "the misrepresentation of combatants as journalists or media workers", but retained the majority of names on its list after finding insufficient evidence they were active combatants. HonestReporting/Washington Free Beacon criticism noted that CPJ "still left a majority of the remaining names linked to terrorist organizations, according to an independent review" is itself a partisan interpretation, not CPJ's position.
A Palestinian researcher review noted CPJ "ultimately removed 22 people from its list, including some it found had participated in combat — but retained others despite militant obituaries, gun photos, or past organisational ties when the evidence did not establish active combatant status."
Conclusion
There is no independent, peer-reviewed verification that a majority of those killed were terrorist operatives; the majority-linked claim remains contested and depends on a broad definition of "affiliation" that includes media work for Hamas-affiliated outlets versus active membership in armed wings.
