Is Donald Trump improving the lives of Americans?
Trump's impact is widely debated — I'll pull the latest data on how Americans are faring.
Whether Donald Trump's second administration is improving lives depends on which metrics and whose perspective is used. Evidence is mixed:
What the administration and supporters point to:
What independent economic data shows in early 2026:
FactCheck.org's April 2026 update summarizing the first 14 months of the second term found:
In more detail, the Consumer Price Index rose 3.0% in the 12 months before Trump took office and 3.3% in the most recent 12-month period as of March 2026, and gasoline rose from $2.78 a gallon the week he was sworn in to $4.04 as of April 20, an increase of 29.9%, driven in part by the Iran conflict.
Other analyses noted Americans "are facing higher costs of living and fewer opportunities" after one year, with nearly 70% expecting economic difficulty in 2026.
What public opinion polling shows:
In sum, the administration points to tax cuts, deregulation, GDP growth and real wage gains as evidence lives are improving, while independent data shows slower job growth, slightly higher inflation and gasoline prices, modest real wage growth, and record-low consumer sentiment, and a majority of polled Americans say they do not feel better off and disapprove of his economic handling.
