Here's a roundup of the most significant news stories today, October 13, 2026:

Middle East Crisis Escalates

The Houthi-Saudi conflict has intensified dramatically. At least 20 people, including a U.S. national, have been killed in a week of Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia's main airport, pushing oil prices back up and prompting President Trump to consider joining the Saudi-led battle against the Houthis in Yemen as it becomes the epicenter of the Middle East war. Saudi Arabia is now investigating its air defense failures, and Saudi Arabia has launched an investigation to determine how its air defenses failed to intercept a barrage of missiles and drones fired by Iran-backed Houthi rebels. Separately, Yemen's Houthi rebels have once again fired a ballistic missile at the international airport in the capital of Saudi Arabia, and warned that the United States would face retaliation if it intervenes.

Ukraine War Continues

Fighting remains heavy on the ground. Russian forces launched a massive attack on Kharkiv on Monday evening using an estimated 10 Banderol missiles, affecting eight people, including two in serious condition, and destroying an entire apartment building entrance. On the diplomatic front, Lithuania's Foreign Minister called on the EU to accelerate Ukraine's membership process, following Ukraine's adoption of legislation expanding educational rights for national minorities — a key condition Hungary had set for advancing accession talks. Meanwhile, according to one report, Zelensky claims Russia struck a power plant shortly after a Trump-announced energy ceasefire, raising doubts about the truce's durability.

Nobel Prize in Economics

Americans Robert E. Hall and Michael Woodford won the 2026 Nobel Economics Prize for research on economic stabilisation.

France School Shooting Incident

A violent incident at a French school made headlines: French judicial police officers arrived at the Joseph-Lakanal middle school after a headmaster was injured by a hunting rifle shot and a teenager was arrested in Aubagne, southern France, on October 12, 2026. Officials say a staff member managed to disarm the suspect, who had concealed a hunting shotgun in a guitar case, before police arrived.
