What are the most important events and topics in the news today?

Here's a roundup of today's most significant news stories and topics from around the world:

Geopolitics & U.S. Foreign Policy

U.S.–South Korea Trade Tensions: U.S. President Donald Trump has unilaterally asserted that South Korea will invest $8.4 billion in an energy business project, and regarding the Alaska LNG project, he even threatened that if South Korea does not invest, he will charge double the costs elsewhere.

Global Fuel Crisis: A diesel/fuel shortage is rippling across multiple regions. Texas's governor declared a state of emergency over fuel shortage as global oil supplies continue to tighten amid ongoing geopolitical conflicts that have pushed up fuel prices. Separately, the U.S. has reportedly threatened an EU diesel export ban unless reserve fuel is released. On the flip side, Europe has agreed to release stocked diesel oil, according to Trump.

Security Incidents

•An Indian airline captain was hailed as a hero after a cockpit attack on a FlyDubai flight, and Israeli officials are set to question the co-pilot of that flight.

•Iran may have played a part in a U.S.-run Fairford air base incident, according to the U.K.

•As for the U.S. government shutdown, the federal government is currently operating normally, with all agencies funded — meaning the earlier record-length shutdown drama from earlier this year has been resolved for now.

South Korea

•A major cybersecurity crisis is unfolding in South Korea's banking sector: following Shinhan Bank, it has been confirmed that personal information from three more banks—KB Kookmin Bank, Hana Bank, and BNK Busan Bank—has been leaked, with circumstances indicating AI involvement, prompting financial authorities to order a comprehensive system inspection and police to launch an internal investigation.

•South Korea's judicial reform hit turbulence: the Serious Crime Investigation Agency and the Prosecution Service officially launched without agency heads, with the Prosecution Service facing disruptions from day one, including trials being halted over the issue of dispatching independent counsels.

Sports — 2026 Asian Games (Nagoya, Japan)

The Games are in their final stretch:

•South Korea's archery men's national team secured its second consecutive team event championship, and the esports League of Legends national team defeated Taiwan to win its second straight tournament title.

•The Games are in their penultimate day of medal events, with athletes competing for gold in high-stakes finals including athletics, hockey, and boxing.

•Breakdancing debuted as part of the competition, held between 2 and 3 October 2026 in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture, Japan.

Global Health

Rebel-held eastern Congo has recorded six new Ebola cases, continuing concerns about the outbreak's spread.

Politics Elsewhere

The future of Amazon rainforest policies is at stake in the Brazilian presidential election, while an Israeli Arab leader has withdrawn from an election race under court pressure.

In the U.S. Today

It's also a big day domestically for politics and culture: candidates for the upcoming November midterm elections are holding high-profile rallies to mobilize voters ahead of state registration deadlines, and advocacy groups are gathering in Washington to highlight major upcoming Supreme Court cases involving civil liberties, ahead of the new judicial term beginning the first Monday of October.
