Were a majority of the Gazan journalists killed since October 7th, 2023 linked to terrorist organizations?
I'll investigate whether most Gazan journalists killed since October 7th had terrorist ties.
No single agreed figure exists - answer depends on source:
The Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center published a 140-page study in December examining, name by name, Palestinians identified as journalists or media workers killed in Gaza, and concluded that roughly 60% were members of or affiliated with terrorist organizations — primarily Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
The study examined 266 media workers reported killed between Oct. 7, 2023, and Nov. 30, 2025, and found that 157 were members of or affiliated with terror groups. At least 47 belonged to Hamas's military wing and 45 were linked to Palestinian Islamic Jihad, including 18 confirmed operatives.
Other summaries of the same study phrase it as at least 157 were members of terror groups, including 104 tied to Hamas and 45 to Islamic Jihad, or about 60% were members of or affiliated with terrorist organizations.
The institute said methodology was examining Arabic-language social media, Telegram channels, mourning notices, funeral footage, organizational statements and claims of responsibility.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) is the group behind the most-cited database. It has said:
> The Committee to Protect Journalists has launched a full review of its Gaza journalist casualty database after Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad published obituaries identifying some of those previously listed as journalists as combatants
As of June 25, 2026, the current total of individuals documented by CPJ as journalists or media workers killed by Israel in Gaza ... since October 7, 2023, stands at 209.
In that June review, CPJ has removed eight names from its Killed database because they were later established to have been Hamas or PIJ combatants. A further 12 individuals were removed for other reasons.
In June 2026, the CPJ made public that it removed 20 names ... including eight individuals that it determined were members of Hamas or Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
A further nineteen were removed in September 2026, when The Committee to Protect Journalists said Thursday that 19 Palestinians killed by Israeli fire who it had previously identified as journalists or media workers were actually militants or participants in combat. After a review of its tally, it says Israeli forces have killed 191 Palestinian journalists and media workers since the start of the war in Gaza.
CPJ has said its process requires at least two independent sources before someone is added to the database, that it does not include anyone when there is evidence they were engaged in combat, and
> "CPJ condemns in no uncertain terms the misrepresentation of combatants as journalists or media workers — or the misuse of 'Press' insignia. Such actions endanger every single individual journalist"
Even after those removals, outside audits contest CPJ's remaining list:
> The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) still includes at least 120 names linked to Hamas and other terror factions on its widely cited list of "journalists" killed in Gaza
according to an audit cited by the Washington Free Beacon, while a HonestReporting audit claimed About 56 of the names still on the list were active, violent militants when they died.
CPJ disputes Israeli claims, stating that its review still shows Israeli forces have been responsible for the majority of killings of journalists since 2023, and human rights organizations have described Israel's evidence for terrorist affiliation as not credible.
In short: The Israeli-affiliated Meir Amit center asserts ~60% affiliation; CPJ and other international press organizations, after their own name-by-name reviews, have acknowledged and removed about 27 persons found to be militants/combatants (8 in June + 19 in September) - about 10-15% of the ~200+ names they track - and maintain the majority of those they still count were legitimate journalists/media workers killed by Israeli fire.
