What are the most important events and topics in the news today?
Here's a roundup of the most significant news stories today, September 26, 2026:
US–China Relations
Chinese President Xi Jinping concluded a landmark state visit to Washington—his first state visit to the US in 11 years—with reports that "trade talks yield results" after meeting face-to-face with US leaders for three straight days. The two nations reportedly agreed to extend their trade truce ahead of high-stakes talks.
Middle East Tensions
Fallout continues from Netanyahu's UN speech, where the Israeli prime minister labeled NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani an antisemite during his UN General Assembly address, prompting Mamdani to respond that Netanyahu sought to "sanitize his genocide of Palestinians." The speech triggered protests, with dozens of people—including celebrities and city officials—arrested outside while protesting Netanyahu's appearance. Separately, a UN report indicates Gaza is facing a severe economic crisis, with more than 90% of its working-age population unemployed.
Russia–Ukraine War
The war's economic toll deepened as ArcelorMittal completely halted steel operations in Kryvyi Rih after four Russian missile strikes killed five people and injured 17 over five weeks, with the company expecting a $1 billion impairment charge.
US Legal/Political Developments
Weather/Domestic
Severe weather is hitting the Pacific Northwest, with wind advisories, rain, and storms causing power outages in Western Washington.
Global Economy
International agencies are bullish on India's growth: Fitch Ratings, S&P Global Ratings, the OECD and the ADB raised India's FY27 growth forecasts to 6.9%–7.1%.
Sports
It's a big day at the Asian Games in Japan, where South Korea's women's basketball team will challenge for simultaneous men's and women's gold medals for the first time in 12 years against host nation Japan. In Formula 1, Alpine driver Pierre Gasly achieved his maiden pole position at the Italian Grand Prix, becoming the first French driver to do so since Jean Alesi in 1997.
