What are the most important events and topics in the news today?

I have enough to give a solid roundup of today's major news. Here's a summary of the most important stories making headlines on September 22, 2026:

🌍 World Politics

Germany's political earthquake: Chancellor Friedrich Merz's Christian Democratic Union suffered its worst-ever result in state elections held September 20. The AfD won about 38% of the vote in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, while the CDU recorded its worst result in any German state election since World War II, falling from 13% to 4.9% and losing all representation. Meanwhile, in Berlin's state election, the Left more than doubled its vote share to 25.7% and finished first for the first time. AfD co-leader Alice Weidel declared her party is "clearly the new people's party in Germany," while Merz told reporters "We can't sugarcoat the results." This follows an even bigger AfD showing two weeks earlier — the party won 43.8% in Saxony-Anhalt, falling just three seats short of a majority.

Middle East tensions continue: The U.S.-Iran conflict remains a major ongoing story. Since March 2026, the US has conducted an aerial campaign against Iranian targets to reopen the Strait of Hormuz following its closure by Iran, with Iran allegedly striking multiple commercial ships and the US responding by striking Iranian territory. Most recently, on September 1, Trump confirmed strikes, saying US forces were striking Iranian targets near the Strait of Hormuz as retaliation "for the Iranians' failed attempt at adding sea mines to the Strait." This conflict has caused a broader energy-market disruption, with about 25% of the world's seaborne oil trade and 20% of the world's liquefied natural gas passing through the strait before the war.
