Is cryptocurrency a safe investment?

Crypto safety is a big question — I'll check current risks and expert views on whether it's a safe investment.

Generally, cryptocurrency is NOT considered a safe investment in the traditional sense - it is considered a high-risk, speculative asset class.

While it has potential for high returns, experts and regulators consistently warn that it comes with unique and significant risks:

1. Extreme Volatility

Cryptocurrency is notoriously risky with extreme price fluctuations.

•Market volatility: Prices can rise fast and fall faster, especially in smaller or less liquid assets
•Cryptocurrency values can fluctuate dramatically within minutes or hours. You might experience big gains one day and large losses the next
•The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns: A cryptocurrency's value can change constantly and dramatically. An investment that may be worth thousands of dollars on Tuesday could be worth only hundreds on Wednesday. If the value goes down, there's no guarantee it will rise again

The FTC also notes: If the value goes down, there's no guarantee it will rise again.

It is possible to make a lot of money but it is also very possible to lose all of your invested money. Some experts suggest legitimate cryptocurrency investments like Bitcoin should be viewed as moonshot opportunities in which your investment could fall to zero or yield a profit of 100 percent or more.

2. Lack of Government Backing and Protections

•Cryptocurrencies aren't backed by a government or central bank. Unlike most traditional currencies, such as the dollar or yen, the value of a cryptocurrency is not tied to promises by a government or a central bank
•If you store your cryptocurrency online, you don't have the same protections as a bank account. Holdings in online "wallets" are not insured by the government like U.S. bank deposits are
•Nothing about cryptocurrencies makes them a foolproof investment. Just like with any investment opportunity, there are no guarantees

3. Security Risks, Scams and Fraud

Cryptocurrency offers exciting opportunities but its volatility, security risks, and regulatory uncertainties make it a high-risk asset class.

Other specific risks include:

•Extreme price volatility. Exchange hacks & scams. Regulatory uncertainty
•Hacks are common and large: In 2024, the crypto ecosystem experienced a record number of security incidents, including three hacks exceeding $50 million. A global exchange lost $1.5 billion in a single February 2025 incident
•Scams: More than $12.4 billion was lost to pigbutchering scams in 2024 alone
•Fraudsters continue to exploit the rising popularity of crypto assets to lure retail investors into scams, often leading to devastating losses

4. Regulatory and Information Risks

•The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) warns unregistered offerings in crypto asset securities may not provide investors important information for informed decision-making, including audited financial statements
•No one can guarantee you'll make money off your investment. Anyone who promises you a guaranteed return or profit is likely scamming you
•It is never a good idea to make an investment decision just because someone famous says a product or service is a good investment. A celebrity endorsement does not mean that an investment is appropriate for all investors, or even that it is legitimate

Can It Ever Be Part of a Safe Strategy?

Most financial educators do not recommend crypto as a core or "safe" investment. If you do choose to invest, common advice is:

•Given the potential for both high returns and significant losses, crypto should form only a small portion of a broader, well-diversified investment strategy
•Investing in crypto assets is risky, but it can be a good investment if you do it properly and as part of a diversified portfolio

Steps to reduce risk if you decide to invest include: only invest what you can afford to lose, use reputable exchanges, use hardware wallets, enable two-factor authentication, diversify, and research thoroughly - look into claims the company is making and search with words like review, scam, or complaint.

Bottom line: Compared to insured bank deposits, government bonds, or broad stock index funds, cryptocurrency is widely regarded as high-risk and volatile, not safe. It is best approached as a speculative asset, not a stable store of value.
