What are the 10 biggest news stories from today?

Based on current news coverage as of September 20, 2026, here are 10 of the biggest stories making headlines today:

.U.S.-Denmark Greenland security deal – President Trump says he has a deal with Denmark to bolster the U.S. military presence in Greenland, an announcement that comes after months of threatening to take the island by force from the NATO ally. The agreement bans any non-NATO base in Greenland, limits adversaries from being able to make investments in Greenland and guarantees that China and Russia cannot have a base there. Danish PM Mette Frederiksen said the three governments plan to sign it next week.

.The 2026 Iran War continues into its seventh month – Fighting between the U.S./Israel and Iran remains a dominant story, with the six-month-old Iran conflict having reshaped the U.S. midterm election race, undermining Trump's campaign pledge to steer clear of foreign conflicts and challenging Republicans as they cling to narrow majorities in Congress.

.Russia's parliamentary election held in annexed Ukrainian territory – Russia's parliamentary election is, for the first time, being held in Ukraine's regions that Moscow illegally annexed after the start of its full-scale invasion more than 4½ years ago.

.Trump threatens more media bans over unfavorable coverage – The president chalked a recent media ban up to what he called unfavorable coverage, and he threatened that bans on other media companies could be coming.

.Cargo ship fire disaster in China – At least 20 people are killed and five others are reported missing after a fire breaks out on a cargo ship in Qingdao, Shandong, China.

.Deadly tourist bus crash in Switzerland – Five people are killed and 40 others are injured after a bus carrying Dutch tourists crashes between Zernez and Susch, Switzerland.

.Bangladesh's worsening measles outbreak – Seven more children die from suspected measles in Bangladesh in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths in the country to 1,009. The health minister announced a resumption of nationwide vaccinations beginning September 25.

.Algeria severs diplomatic relations with the UAE – Algeria cuts diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates, without specifying a reason.

.Weapons depot explosion in Syria – Fourteen people are killed and eleven others are injured in an explosion at a weapons depot in Sarmada, Syria.

.Global economic outlook amid ongoing conflicts – The International Monetary Fund reports that global economic growth is on track to reach 3% in 2026 despite the war in Iran, but also cautioned that risks still remain high.
