Middle East: Escalating Regional War
The 2026 Iran war — which began with US and Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, 2026 — continues to expand into a multi-front regional conflict, now involving the United States, Israel, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Bahrain against Iran and its "Axis of Resistance" allies including Hezbollah and Iraqi militias.
Yemen has become a major flashpoint. Iran-backed Houthi rebels have seized control of the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, the crucial gateway for global shipping between the Red Sea and Indian Ocean, and for more than a month have been striking Saudi oil infrastructure and shipping, putting pressure on global oil prices. On the ground, intense clashes have focused on coastal areas including Mocha and Hodeidah as Houthi forces push toward vital shipping lanes, while heavy ground battles rage in Taiz province. This is an escalation of the decade-long Houthi–Saudi Arabian conflict during the 2026 Iran War.
Saudi Arabia has faced direct Iranian retaliation, with multiple retaliatory Iranian missile strikes targeting oil refineries since the war began, while the Royal Saudi Air Force has secretly carried out strikes on Iranian drone and missile-launch sites and struck Iranian-backed militias in Iraq.
U.S. Politics & Policy
Economic Impact
The war is hitting consumers directly: gas prices are running about 15 cents per gallon more than a week ago, with diesel fuel now at an all-time high, topping $6 a gallon — with the war with Iran being the biggest factor.
Public Health
A measles outbreak continues to cause concern in multiple countries. In Pennsylvania, a 40-year-old woman has died from measles complications — the third death linked to the outbreak. Internationally, Bangladesh reported seven more suspected measles deaths in children within 24 hours, bringing the total to 1,009, prompting plans to resume nationwide vaccinations beginning September 25.
