Will AI create or take away more job opportunities?

Short answer: It depends on the timeframe and who you ask — but most major forecasts point to a net gain globally, even as the transition creates real winners and losers.

The headline numbers

The most-cited projection comes from the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025: job disruption will equate to 22% of jobs by 2030, with 170 million new roles set to be created and 92 million displaced, resulting in a net increase of 78 million jobs. This is based on surveys of over 1,000 employers representing 14 million workers across 55 economies.

Growth is expected to concentrate in specific areas — technology, data and AI, but growth also expected for core economy roles including delivery drivers, care roles, educators and farmworkers, while decline is projected in cashier, administrative, and clerical roles.

But the "net positive" number hides a lot of pain

Even WEF-aligned analysts caution that the aggregate statistic masks enormous variation by role, industry, and geography — if you are in one of the roles being displaced, the net gain is cold comfort, while if you are in one of the emerging roles, the opportunity is historic.

There's also a growing concern that displacement and creation aren't happening to the same people or at the same pace:

•AI is suppressing hiring more than destroying existing jobs — companies are integrating AI to avoid adding headcount, meaning the jobs that would have existed never get created.
•Entry-level and young workers appear especially exposed: employment for AI-exposed 22-to-25-year-olds fell roughly 16% per Stanford Digital Economy Lab data, and entry-level hiring in tech fell 73% even as workers with AI skills earn a 62% wage premium.

Real-world evidence so far is mixed and modest

A recent 2026 YouGov survey found that four years after ChatGPT's debut, AI has not yet resulted in substantial job losses or gains for these workers — with 6% landing AI-created roles and 9% getting AI-linked promotions between 2023 and 2026, but no widespread displacement yet in that sample.

At the same time, layoff tracking shows AI's footprint growing quickly: in March 2026, AI became the #1 most-cited reason for workforce reductions for the first time ever, accounting for 25% of total cuts that month, and AI was the leading stated reason for US layoffs in 2026 with 116,175 cuts through August.

Where growth is concentrating

Corporate case studies show automation-driven headcount cuts even as firms redeploy elsewhere — e.g., Klarna reported reducing customer service headcount by 700 agents (from 2,300 to 1,600) after deploying AI, with the AI handling 70% of all customer interactions. Meanwhile new job categories are emerging in areas like prompt engineers, AI ethics officers, human-AI collaboration specialists, AI trainers, data annotation specialists, AI auditors, and machine learning operations.

Bottom line

Most credible institutional forecasts (WEF being the most-cited) predict a net positive in raw job numbers globally by 2030, but:

1.The people losing jobs are often not the same people filling new ones, creating a serious skills/reskilling gap.
2.Entry-level and routine white-collar roles (data entry, basic customer service, junior coding, administrative work) are most at risk in the near term.
3.Short-term layoff data in 2025–2026 shows AI rising fast as a stated cause of job cuts in the U.S., even while long-term projections stay net-positive.
4.Public sentiment is split — some surveys note the majority of workers now believe AI will eliminate more jobs than it creates, even though institutional forecasts lean toward net job growth.

So: more jobs overall, but not necessarily more jobs for the specific people and roles being displaced — the transition, not the total, is where the real risk lies.
