What are the 10 biggest news stories from today?
Here are ten of the most significant news stories shaping the global conversation today, September 12, 2026:
1. The 25th Anniversary of 9/11 and the CIA’s Trove Release
The United States and the global community marked the historic 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Presidents Joe Biden, Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton joined thousands of victims’ families at the World Trade Center site in New York, while President Donald Trump commemorated the day at the Pentagon. To coincide with the quarter-century memorial, the CIA declassified and released 71 high-level intelligence reports from the months leading up to the 2001 attacks, detailing what analysts told presidents about Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda's imminent threat.
2. Major Escalation in the Red Sea: Houthis Seize Mocha and Bab el-Mandeb Coastline
Yemen’s Houthi rebels seized the strategic port city of Mocha and Perim Island, tightening their control over the entire Yemeni Red Sea coastline and the vital Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Following the escalation, Saudi Arabia temporarily halted oil flow through its East-West Pipeline as a precaution after suspected drone strikes, sending Brent crude prices soaring above $110 a barrel.
3. Ukraine’s Record-Breaking Drone Strike in the Russian Arctic
Ukrainian Special Operations Forces executed their deepest-range attack inside Russia to date, sending drones nearly 2,000 miles (3,200 km) from the Ukrainian border. The targeted strikes hit two critical natural gas processing facilities in northwestern Siberia’s Yamalo-Nenets region: the Novy Urengoy Gas Condensate Treatment Plant and a plant in the Purovsky district. Ukrainian officials emphasized that the strike successfully hit a core economic engine previously considered entirely out of reach.
4. Ukrainian President Zelensky Visits Canada; Prime Minister Mark Carney Pledges Air Defense
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky traveled to Canada to meet with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. During the visit, the Carney administration announced a new defense strategy, pledging immediate air defense support, restocking Ukraine’s drone supplies, and launching a joint initiative to scale up drone production in Canadian and Ukrainian defense facilities.
5. Controversy Grows Over Repurposing Guantánamo Bay for Migrants
Immigration advocates and civil rights groups are expressing outrage after reports emerged that federal immigration authorities (ICE) sent Adam Abdullah, a Somali asylum seeker with no criminal record who was living legally in Minnesota, to the military prison at Guantánamo Bay. Abdullah is reportedly one of at least eight Somali nationals currently housed at Camp Six—which has been repurposed to hold migrants—as part of the Trump administration's "Operation Metro Surge".
6. The 2026 US Open Women's Singles Final Takes Center Stage Today
The final Grand Slam match of the women's tennis season takes place today at Flushing Meadows. In a highly anticipated matchup, two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka is set to battle the newly crowned world No. 1 Elena Rybakina. The championship match comes just after Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova claimed the women's doubles title yesterday, completing a career Grand Slam as a team.
7. The 83rd Venice International Film Festival Concludes
The 83rd annual Venice International Film Festival wraps up today on the Lido di Venezia. Juries led by President Maggie Gyllenhaal are set to award the highly coveted Golden Lion tonight. Earlier in the festival, legendary American actors Ellen Burstyn and George Clooney were honored with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement.
8. Supreme Court Blocks Missouri’s Gerrymandered Congressional Map
In US domestic politics, the Supreme Court issued an emergency ruling blocking Missouri Republicans from using a newly redrawn congressional map for the upcoming November midterm elections. Critics of the map successfully gathered over 300,000 signatures to force a referendum, prompting the High Court to mandate that the state revert to the congressional districts drawn in 2022 for the upcoming vote.
9. Corruption Probe Rocks Brazil’s Tight Presidential Election
With Brazil's presidential election only weeks away, candidate Flávio Bolsonaro's campaign was thrown into turmoil after a judge unsealed court documents revealing a massive corruption and money laundering investigation. The probe centers on the financing of a film about his father, former president Jair Bolsonaro, tightening the race even further.
10. Nepal Demands $20 Million in UN Climate Loss Compensation
The government of Nepal has formally demanded $20 million in compensation from the UN's climate loss and damage fund. The demand comes as rescue workers continue to search for more than 5,000 people who remain missing more than two weeks after a catastrophic glacier collapse triggered devastating landslides and floods. Nepal’s leaders emphasized that they are bearing the brunt of a climate crisis they did little to create.
