Short answer: often yes for workers, and mixed-to-modestly-positive for the wider economy—depending on how unions and bargaining are designed. What unions tend to do for workers - Pay and benefits: Union workers typically earn more than comparable nonunion workers (often estimated around 10–20% higher) and are more likely to have health insurance, paid leave, and pensions. - Safer, more predictab

Short answer: Yes—at current levels of intake, ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are a public‑health concern. Large evidence syntheses link higher UPF consumption to higher risks of multiple diseases, and small randomized trials plus plausible mechanisms support causality for at least some harms. What the evidence shows - An umbrella review of 45 meta-analyses (pooled from millions of participants) fo

Short answer: Both—but in different places and on different timelines. In the near term, AI will eliminate or shrink some roles while creating others. Over longer horizons, most economists expect total employment to be roughly stable or grow modestly, with big shifts in what people do and how they’re paid. The net outcome depends on adoption speed, regulation, market competition, and how well work

Yes. The overwhelming scientific consensus is that humans are the primary cause of the warming observed since the mid‑20th century. Why scientists are confident: - Greenhouse gases: Burning fossil fuels, deforestation, cement production, and agriculture have sharply increased CO2, methane, and nitrous oxide. The carbon “fingerprint” (isotopes) shows much of the added CO2 comes from fossil fuels.

Short answer: It depends what problem you most want to solve. “UBI” is a tool, not a goal. If your top goals are to cut poverty, smooth income shocks, and simplify aid with minimal red tape, some form of guaranteed income makes sense; if your priorities are tight budgets or preserving targeted programs, a full universal stipend may not be the best first step. What we know from evidence - Cash wor

Here’s a quick snapshot as of September 22, 2026: - Who’s in charge: Donald Trump is in his second, non‑consecutive term as president after being inaugurated on January 20, 2025. ([reutersconnect.com](https://www.reutersconnect.com/item/inauguration-ceremony-for-trumps-second-presidential-term/dGFnOnJldXRlcnMuY29tLDIwMjU6bmV3c21sX1JDMlREQ0FJTkNTQg/?utmsource=openai)) - Congress: Republicans hold

Short answer: neither is inherently safer. “Open” and “closed” trade off different risks, and which is safer depends on the model’s capability, the threat model, and the release practices around it. How “open” or “closed” matters - Openness has layers: code, research papers, training data, evaluation artifacts, and model weights. Sharing code/evals is lower risk than releasing high‑capability wei

Yes. The student-led pro‑democracy protests took place in spring 1989, and the military crackdown in Beijing occurred on the night of June 3–4, 1989.

Short answer: No—overall U.S. consumer prices are higher than a year ago. - As of August 2026, the Consumer Price Index (CPI-U) was up 3.4% year over year. Grocery prices (“food at home”) were up 2.2%, and overall goods excluding food and energy were up 0.7%. ([bls.gov](https://www.bls.gov/news.release/archives/cpi09112026.htm)) - Some categories are cheaper than a year ago (for example, used car

Short answer: It’s not too late to make a huge difference—but “reverse” needs unpacking. What we can’t fully reverse on human timescales - Some sea-level rise is locked in and will continue for centuries even if we stop emissions today. - Many glaciers, lost species, degraded reefs, and portions of permafrost won’t recover quickly. - Parts of the ocean’s acidification and heat content will take c

Short answer: In most cases, yes. Over their full life cycle, electric vehicles (EVs) are generally better for the environment than comparable gasoline cars—especially for climate pollution and local air quality. Why EVs are usually cleaner - Lifetime greenhouse gases: Even after accounting for battery manufacturing, most EVs emit substantially less CO2e over their lifetime than similar gas cars.

Short answer: not a blanket pause, but yes—targeted restrictions now, plus conditional, time‑bound pauses when specific risk thresholds are crossed. How to think about it - Reasons to restrict: catastrophic misuse (bio/cyber), loss of control from increasingly autonomous systems, large‑scale misinformation, labor market shocks, and power concentration. - Reasons not to blanket‑pause: medical/scie

Short answer: it depends. Social media is a tool; whether it’s more helpful or harmful comes down to how, how much, and why you use it. Helpful when it’s used for - Connection: keeping up with friends/family, especially long‑distance; finding community and support. - Opportunity: learning new skills, discovering events, showcasing work, networking, finding jobs/clients. - Civic value: sharing inf

Short answer: Partly. As of September 22, 2026, the U.S. is better equipped than in 2020 in several technical ways (surveillance, forecasting, and medical countermeasures), but overall readiness is uneven and vulnerable to funding, coordination, workforce, and public‑trust gaps. What’s stronger now - Faster detection and situational awareness: CDC’s data‑modernization work expanded near–real‑time

Short answer: In the U.S., the best-supported path isn’t “more regulation” across the board or “no new laws,” but a set of narrow, evidence‑backed rules aimed at clearly defined risks—paired with strong due‑process protections and fair enforcement. Why this middle path - Goals that most people share: fewer deaths (especially suicides and domestic‑violence shootings), less gun theft/trafficking, a

Here are 10 of today’s biggest stories (Tuesday, September 22, 2026): - UN General Assembly opens its High‑Level Week in New York, with wars (Iran, Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, Congo, Myanmar), AI risks and climate shocks topping the agenda. ([un.org](https://www.un.org/en/ga/?utmsource=openai)) - Xi Jinping’s state visit to Washington (Sept 23–25) sets up a Trump–Xi summit; expectations center on modes

Short answer: It’s prudent for the minimum wage to at least keep up with inflation; linking it fully to local “cost of living” is more debated and often works best alongside other policies. What “keep up” can mean - Inflation-indexed floor: Adjusts automatically with CPI so purchasing power doesn’t erode. - Regional adjustments: Higher floors in high-cost metros/states using local price indexes.

Short answer: It depends what “improving” means to you (efficiency, competence, policy outcomes, rule‑of‑law, service quality, public trust). Here are the clearest, recent, evidence‑based changes and indicators, as of September 22, 2026: - Civil service and management reforms: On January 20, 2025, President Trump reinstated and expanded the prior “Schedule F” concept (now “Schedule Policy/Career”

Short answer: No—cryptocurrency is not a “safe” investment in the traditional sense. It’s a high-risk, high-volatility asset class that’s appropriate only for money you can afford to lose. Key risks to understand - Market volatility: 50–90% drawdowns have happened multiple times, often quickly. - Regulatory risk: Rules can change and materially affect prices, access, and taxes. - Technology and s

Short answer: In most advanced economies, an abrupt stop to immigration would likely create or worsen labor shortages—especially in the short to medium run—and would slow overall growth. Why that happens - Demographics: With aging populations and fertility below replacement for many years, native-born labor-force growth is low. Immigration is a key source of new workers; removing it shrinks futur

Here’s a quick snapshot of the biggest stories as of Tuesday, September 22, 2026 (U.S. ET): - U.S.–China: Xi Jinping arrives this week for a White House state visit; Trump plans to greet him at Joint Base Andrews. Expectations are for modest progress on trade/tech, with rare earths and investment flows in focus. The U.S. has floated an AI “incident” notification mechanism in recent talks. ([apnew

Short answer: it depends on what you weigh most. Ways NATO is arguably a force for good - Deterrence and stability: Since 1949 there’s been no war among NATO members, and the alliance has raised the costs of interstate aggression in Europe. - Collective defense with political guardrails: Decisions require consensus, which tends to restrain rash action and keeps military planning tied to political

Short answer: Voter fraud in the U.S. exists but is rare. It’s found at rates far below what would change outcomes in statewide or national elections in recent years. What the evidence shows - In‑person voter impersonation is exceedingly uncommon; it’s risky and easy to detect relative to the potential payoff. - More plausible fraud attempts involve absentee/mail ballots or third‑party ballot col

Short answer: It depends on your goals. If the priorities are raising stable revenue and reducing very high-end inequality with limited impact on growth, there’s a solid case for somewhat higher effective tax rates on the ultra‑wealthy—achieved more by broadening the base and tightening preferences on capital income than by simply hiking the top labor‑income bracket. If your top priority is maximi

Yes. Vaccines are one of the most effective public health tools for preventing infectious disease. In brief: - How they work: They train your immune system to recognize a pathogen before you encounter the real thing, sharply lowering your risk of infection and especially severe illness, hospitalization, and death. - Real‑world impact: Vaccination eradicated smallpox worldwide, has driven polio to

Here are the top business/market headlines for Tuesday, September 22, 2026: - U.S. stocks rallied Monday and the Nasdaq closed at a record high, led by AI-related gains; Treasury yields and oil prices retreated, easing recent market headwinds. Short answer: it depends on what you value. Biden’s term (January 20, 2021–January 20, 2025) had clear strengths and clear downsides. Where supporters say he did well - Big legislation: American Rescue Plan (COVID relief), Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, CHIPS and Science Act (semiconductors), Inflation Reduction Act (clean‑energy spending plus Medicare drug negotiations), PACT Act (veterans), Bip

Short answer: It depends what you prioritize. Since Donald Trump took office again on January 20, 2025, several nationwide indicators have improved, while others are mixed. What’s gotten better - Incomes and poverty: Real median household income rose 2.6% in 2025 to a record $87,460; the official poverty rate fell to 10.2% (a new series low), with child poverty also at a historic low. ([cdn.www.c

Here are the biggest, evidence-based threats in the United States’ political climate as of September 22, 2026: - Deepening polarization and low trust. Public trust in the federal government remains near historic lows, and dissatisfaction with how U.S. democracy is working is widespread, which erodes consent to govern and makes compromise harder. ([pewresearch.org](https://www.pewresearch.org/poli

Short answer: It depends what you mean by “polarization.” - In Congress (elite ideological polarization): By the main roll‑call metric used by political scientists, party separation is at or near its highest level since the late 19th century. So among elected officials, yes—today is about as polarized as any period for which we have comparable data. - Among the public on issues (policy views): A
