This is a genuinely debated question among historians and political scientists, and the answer depends a lot on what you're measuring. Reasons to think it's more severe now (at least in the US context): - Legislative gridlock and straight-ticket voting are at historic highs—there's very little cross-party cooperation in Congress compared to, say, the 1960s-80s - "Affective polarization"—dislike a

Whether political polarization is worse today than in the past depends heavily on how polarization is defined, how it is measured, and which historical eras are used as a point of comparison. While most political scientists agree that polarization in the United States has reached levels unseen in the modern era, historians often point out that the nation has survived periods of equal or signific

Political polarization is higher than in recent decades by most modern measures, but not necessarily higher than at the most divided points in American history. It depends on how you define and measure it. Here are the main ways researchers look at it: 1. By Modern Polling and Voting Data - Yes, It Is High Most data on polarization only goes back 50-80 years, and on that scale polarization is

Short answer: It depends on what you mean by “polarization” and which country you have in mind. In the United States, several key forms of polarization are at or near modern highs; in other senses, the past has seen worse. What’s gotten worse (U.S.): - Elite/legislative polarization: Measures of roll‑call voting in Congress show the two parties are farther apart than at any time since the late 19

Yes in specific, measurable ways (especially US elite/partisan and affective polarization since the mid-20th century), but no as an absolute historical peak—earlier eras saw deeper divides, more violence, and existential stakes. Political polarization means growing divergence in views, identities, or animosity along political lines. It is not one thing: distinguish elite polarization (politicians

Political Polarization: Historical Context This is genuinely debated among historians and political scientists, with reasonable arguments on multiple sides. Evidence it's worse now: - Congressional voting patterns show increased party-line splits since the 1970s-80s - Affective polarization (dislike of the opposing party/its members) has risen sharply in survey data - Geographic and social sort

Whether political polarization is worse today than in the past depends largely on the historical baseline used for comparison and how polarization is measured. While current levels of polarization in the United States and several other democracies are at their highest points in decades, a broader historical perspective reveals other eras of equal or greater division. Short answer: In the United States, polarization is higher than it was a few decades ago, but it isn’t the worst in all of history. Globally, the picture is mixed—some democracies are more polarized, others are not. What “worse” means depends on the type of polarization: - Elite/party polarization (in Congress): Very high. Voting patterns show Democrats and Republicans are farther apart than at a

Yes in key measurable ways (especially affective polarization and partisan sorting in the US since the mid-20th century), but not the worst in American history, and the picture is mixed depending on the metric and country. What the Data Shows - Affective polarization (dislike/distrust of the other side as people, not just disagreement on policy) has risen sharply. Pew Research and others documen

Political Polarization: Historical Context The answer depends heavily on time frame and measurement: Case for "yes, historically severe": - Congressional voting patterns show record levels of party-line divergence since systematic tracking began (~1950s) - Affective polarization (dislike of the opposing party/its members) has risen sharply since the 1990s - Cross-party marriage, friendship, and

Whether political polarization is "worse" today than in the past depends heavily on how polarization is defined and which historical periods are used for comparison. Political scientists generally analyze polarization through three lenses: elite polarization (how divided politicians are), ideological sorting (how closely party identity aligns with political ideology), and affective polarization

Short answer: In the United States, yes—by several key measures polarization today is higher than at any time in the modern (post‑World War II) era, though the mid‑19th century Civil War period was more extreme in terms of open conflict. Internationally, trends vary by country. What the evidence shows (mainly U.S.): - Political elites (Congress): Roll‑call voting data (e.g., DW‑NOMINATE scores) i

Yes, by multiple standard measures—especially elite/congressional polarization, partisan sorting, and affective polarization—it is worse in the US than in the recent past (post-WWII through the 1980s/1990s), though not unprecedented in all of American history. Elite and Congressional Polarization Political scientists track this rigorously with tools like DW-NOMINATE scores (based on roll-call vo

This is a genuinely contested question among researchers, and the answer depends heavily on what you're measuring and what timeframe you're using as a comparison. Evidence it's worse (at least in recent decades): - In the US, measures like "affective polarization" (dislike/distrust of the opposing party) have risen sharply since the 1990s - Congressional voting patterns show less bipartisan overl

Whether political polarization is "worse" today than in the past depends heavily on the country being analyzed, the historical timeframe used for comparison, and how polarization is measured. Focusing primarily on the United States, where this debate is most extensively studied, political scientists and historians generally agree that polarization is at its highest level in modern history (since

Do you mean in the United States? If so, here’s the short answer: by most modern measures, yes—polarization is as high or higher than at any time in the last century, though “worse than ever” depends on what you measure and how far back you look. Key points - What “polarization” means: - Elite/legislative polarization: how far apart parties are in elected bodies. - Mass ideological polarizati

Yes, in several measurable ways—especially in the US over the last 40–50 years—political polarization (particularly affective/negative partisanship and elite ideological sorting) is worse than the mid-20th-century baseline, though it is not unprecedented in American or global history and does not match the intensity of eras like the Civil War. Key Distinctions and Evidence Polarization is not on

Political Polarization: Historical Context This depends heavily on what dimension you're looking at, and the honest answer is "it's complicated" rather than a simple yes or no. Ways today's polarization may be worse: - Affective polarization (how much people dislike the opposing side) has risen sharply in the US since the 1980s, based on survey data - Straight-ticket voting and party-line loyal

Whether political polarization is "worse" today than in the past depends heavily on how polarization is measured and which historical periods are used for comparison. Short answer: In the United States, yes—by several commonly used measures polarization is higher than at any time in the modern (post–World War II) era, though it has not reached Civil War–era extremes. In other democracies, polarization has generally risen since the 1990s–2000s, but the scale and pattern vary a lot by country and electoral system. What “worse” means - Ideological (issue) polariz

Yes, by several standard measures in the United States (the most-studied case), political polarization is higher now than it has been for much of the 20th century—though it is not unprecedented in American history, and the picture is more mixed globally or on non-elite measures. Whether political polarization is worse today than in the past is a subject of active debate among political scientists, historians, and sociologists. The answer largely depends on the historical reference points selected and how polarization is defined and measured. When discussing this issue, researchers generally focus on the United States, though similar trends have been observed globally. T

Short answer: In the United States, polarization today is higher than in the late 20th century and near modern-era highs by several key measures, but it is not unprecedented in all of U.S. history (the Civil War/Reconstruction era was worse in terms of open conflict). It depends on the metric, country, and timeframe, but in the contemporary United States many standard indicators show elevated polarization relative to the mid-to-late 20th century—though not necessarily worse than the most extreme historical peaks (e.g., the 1850s–1860s). Key Distinctions - Ideological polarization: Divergence in policy positions or values. - Affective polarization: Emotional d
