The debate over whether open-source AI is safer or riskier than closed-source (proprietary) AI is one of the most complex and critical arguments in technology policy, national security, and computer science. To understand the debate, it helps to distinguish between the two approaches: Closed-Source / Proprietary AI (e.g., OpenAI’s GPT models, Anthropic’s Claude, Google’s Gemini) are accessed

The question of whether open-source AI is safer or riskier than closed (proprietary) AI is one of the most hotly debated issues in technology, policy, and national security. To understand this debate, it is first helpful to clarify the terminology. In AI, "open-source" usually refers to "open-weights" models (such as Meta’s Llama series or Mistral). In these systems, the mathematical parameters

The question of whether open-source AI is safer or riskier than closed-source (proprietary) AI is one of the most critical and fiercely debated topics in technology policy, national security, and computer science. To understand the debate, it is helpful to clarify what "open-source" usually means in AI. While traditional open-source software includes all underlying code, "open-source AI" typical

The question of whether open-source AI is safer or riskier than closed-source (proprietary) AI is one of the most consequential debates in modern technology. To understand the debate, it is helpful to clarify that "open-source AI" in today’s context usually refers to open-weight models (such as Meta’s Llama, Mistral, or DeepSeek). In these models, the underlying neural network parameters (the "w

The question of whether open-source AI is safer or riskier than closed-source (proprietary) AI is one of the most critical debates in technology governance. Rather than a simple "yes" or "no," the answer depends entirely on how one defines safety and the capability level of the model in question. The debate centers on two opposing security philosophies: "Security through control/obscurity" (clos
