Is Donald Trump improving the lives of Americans?
This is a subjective question that reasonable people evaluate very differently depending on their values, priorities, and which policy areas they weigh most heavily. Rather than giving you my own verdict, let me lay out what's actually happening across key areas so you can weigh it yourself. Let me pull some current data. This is a genuinely contested question, and the answer depends heavily on which metrics and values you prioritize. Here's what the data shows as of November 2026, roughly two years into his second term:
Public opinion
By most measures, Americans' assessment has soured considerably. Donald Trump's approval rating recently hit an all time low of 36.3 percent, rebounding since to about 38.3 percent, with disapproval around 59 percent — a far worse position than during his first term at the same point. The recent midterm exit polling found an overwhelming majority (75%) said the economy is in rough shape, and 65% said Trump's policies have worsened economic conditions. On personal finances, 44% of voters said their finances are worse today than two years ago, while just 18% said they are better off.
Economy — a mixed, contested picture
Growth and jobs: Growth has been moderate. Real GDP grew at an annualized rate of 2.2% in the second quarter of 2026, with Q1 revised upward to 2.5%, and by Q3 the economy grew at the fastest pace in the last four quarters, with real GDP growing 3.4% at an annual rate per the Treasury's own statement. But job creation has slowed sharply: total nonfarm employment increased by only 776,000 between January 2025 and September 2026, compared to 2,613,000 during the final 20 months of Biden's administration. The unemployment rate edged up to 4.2%, still historically low by historical standards.
Inflation and prices: This is the biggest sore spot. Headline CPI rose 3.7% over the 12 months through September 2026, picking up from the 3.0% annual rate through September 2025. Gasoline is $4.28 the week ending Oct. 19 — 38% higher than when Trump took office, and diesel prices were still 69% higher than the week Trump took office, partly tied to tariffs and the Iran conflict.
Wages: During Trump's first 12 months inflation-adjusted wages rose 1.83%, but since then real weekly earnings have gone down 0.87%, decreasing this year.
Independent analyses are split. Economists at the Center for American Progress argue the Trump administration's agenda has generated stagflation: slower growth and faster inflation, while cautioning it's "not 1970s level stagflation". Meanwhile, the Treasury Department's own assessment describes the economy under the Trump Administration as strong, supported by robust business investment... as well as solid household consumption growth.
Other notable areas
Bottom line
There's no single objective answer — it depends on whether you weight the stock market, GDP growth, and immigration enforcement (areas where the administration can point to positive trends) more heavily than inflation, grocery/gas prices, job growth, and real wages (where most Americans report feeling worse off). The polling data is fairly unambiguous that a majority of Americans currently believe their own lives have not improved under this administration, particularly on cost-of-living issues — but polling captures sentiment, not necessarily a definitive economic verdict, and sentiment can shift. I'd encourage you to look at the specific areas that matter most to your own life (your industry's job market, your grocery bill, your mortgage rate, etc.) rather than relying on an aggregate judgment.
