Were a majority of the Gazan journalists killed since October 7th, 2023 linked to terrorist organizations?
I'll check whether Gazan journalists killed since October 7th were linked to terrorist groups and verify the casualty figures.
According to Israeli military and pro-Israel watchdog investigations, yes - a majority were found to be linked.
> 170 Palestinians killed in Gaza who were publicly identified as civilian “journalists” were actually affiliated with terrorist organizations
In that investigation the IDF said the 170 included
> 118 members of Hamas's military wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, 49 members of Islamic Jihad
and that
> 17 individuals on the list even took part in the Hamas-led invasion of and massacre across southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023
> 266 media workers reported killed between October 7, 2023, and November 30, 2025. Of these, 157 — roughly 60% — were either members of terrorist groups or worked for outlets affiliated with them
The study was described as finding
> about 60% of individuals identified as journalists killed during the war in Gaza were members of or affiliated with terrorist organizations, primarily Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad
Other summary of same study:
> reviewed a list of 266 people described as journalists or media workers killed in Gaza and concluded at least 157 were members of terror groups, including 104 tied to Hamas and 45 to Islamic Jihad
After CPJ launched review in June 2026 and
> removed 19 terrorists and 3 other fake journalists from the list, but reinstated 4 others
> That leaves a total of 191 supposed Gazan journalists on the CPJ's rejiggered database—102 of whom still have demonstrable "connections to terrorist groups,"
according to HonestReporting:
> 53 percent of those still listed have terrorist ties
> HonestReporting's 138-page review concluded CPJ failed to finish the job
> 102 of 191 people still on the roster have demonstrable connections to terrorist groups, 53 percent
Context and caveats
> 189 were Palestinians killed in Gaza in the Israel-Gaza war
and after its internal review
> Concluded: that Israel was responsible for the deaths of 191 journalists and media workers in IOPT since October 7, 2023
and that the review
> Removed: 22 cases, 19 for actively participating in combat or belonging to the militant wing of a non-state armed actor
CPJ's auditor
> found no evidence that CPJ had removed or retained journalists in violation of its stated criteria
and CPJ maintains its definition allows inclusion of individuals affiliated with militant-linked outlets provided they are not engaging in combat.
The 53% and 60% figures are allegations/findings by IDF, Meir Amit Center and HonestReporting, cited widely by pro-Israel media, and are contested by press-freedom groups and UN reports which count nearly 300 journalists killed since October 2023 without attributing terrorist affiliation. Claims have not been independently verified by neutral international investigation.
